FERPA & Directory Information Notice
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and provides parents and guardians certain rights regarding their child’s information.
Under FERPA, schools may designate certain information as “directory information,” which is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released. WPACS has identified the following as directory information:
-
Student’s name, address, telephone number, and email address
-
Date and place of birth
-
Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
-
Weight and height of athletic team members
-
Dates of attendance and grade level
-
Photograph
-
Degrees and awards received
-
Most recent school attended
-
Parent/guardian address and email address
-
Student ID or unique identifier used for electronic systems (excluding access to education records without secure credentials)
Directory information may be disclosed without prior written consent unless a parent or guardian submits a written request to opt out. Please note that directory information will not be released for commercial purposes and additional protections apply to students identified as homeless.
If you do not want the school to release your child’s directory information, you must submit a written request at the time of enrollment or re-enrollment. Requests should be directed to the Director of School Operations at [email protected].
A complete copy of the Student Records Policy is available upon request at the main office.
